| Frequently Asked Questions:
Question:
How many mg of glucosamine sulfate
per caplet, and how many caplets per bottle?
Answer:
GS1500 has 500 mg of glucoasmine sulfate
and 6mg of manganese sulfate per caplet. The managanese sulfate is for
better absorption. Each bottle has 90 caplets, an average month supply
for those using 1500 mg per day. Specific ingredients can be found at
our Ingredients
page.
Question:
What are the Recommended dosages for
glucosamine sulfate?
Answer:
- Less than 120 pounds: 1,000
milligrams GS1500.
- 120 to 200 pounds: 1,500
milligrams GS1500.
- More than 200 pounds: 2,000
milligrams GS1500.
Note:
You may adjust your dosage according to
your response. If you are overweight or are taking a water pill (diuretic),
you may need a larger dose of each supplement.
Overdosage: No information on overdosage
is available.
Question:
Is it Safe (side effects) ?
Answer:
There have no reports of any adverse
drug interactions with glucosamine sulfate.
Individuals taking diuretics may need
to take higher dosages (20 mg/kg body weight).
A few people have reported stomach upset
and nausea. Try taking the supplement with food if it upsets your stomach
(or if you have an ulcer). If this fails to eliminate the symptoms,
check with your doctor.
There is no concern for people allergic
to sulfa drugs or sulfites. The sulfate form of sulfur is present in
relatively high concentrations in human blood. It is impossible to be
allergic to sulfur as sulfur is an essential mineral.
It has no effect on blood sugar levels,
making it safe for the diabetic. In short, glucosamine sulfate is extremely
well-tolerated and no allergic reactions have been reported.
Special Information ...
If you are Pregnant or Breastfeeding:
Check with your doctor before taking glucosamine sulfate while pregnant
or breastfeeding.
If you have osteoarthritis: Although
glucosamine sulfate may relieve your osteoarthritis, other treatments--such
as a regular exercise program--remain just as important. If you have
this condition, it is recommended to keep in touch with your doctor
for regular check-ups.
Avoid If... Allergic to Shellfish.
Question:
How soon will I notice results?
Answer:
Some people experience pain relief immediately.
Nevertheless, it may take anywhere from 8 weeks to 6 months to repair
damaged cartilage. This is based on the extent of the cartilage damage.
Question:
Does glucosamine sulfate conflict
with other medications?
Answer:
There are no indications that glucosamine
interacts with other medications. Of course, you should always consult
a health practitioner when adding new supplements to your regimen.
Question:
Does it work?
Answer:
Although there are positive results in
case studies, not all participants experienced them. Therefore, glucosamine
sulfate works for many people, it does not necessarily work for all
people.
Question:
How does it work?
Answer:
Glucosamine is a natural sugar produced
by the body and found in certain foods. It plays an important role in
the production, maintenance, and repair of cartilage, the white, smooth,
rubber-like padding that covers the ends of bones and prevents them
from rubbing against each other painfully as we move. It also helps
form ligaments, tendons, and nails.
Glucosamine stimulates the production
of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, two essential building blocks
of cartilage. In most cases, the joints produce sufficient Glucosamine
to keep the cartilage in good repair, but if they fail to do so, it
dries out, degenerates, cracks, and may even completely wear away. Left
unprotected, the joints then become swollen, stiff, inflamed, tender,
and painful--the condition known as osteoarthritis,
Advocates believe that by taking artificially
synthesized Glucosamine sulfate supplements, osteoarthritis sufferers
can "jump start" the natural production of Glucosamine by their own
bodies.
Glucosamine has been used to treat osteoarthritis
in Europe since the 1980s. Several scientific studies have recently
supported its effectiveness, and its popularity in this country is spreading
quickly.
