Thermogenesis:
Tricking the body to burn fat.

Why should you care about thermogenesis?

Because you can use thermogenesis to trick your body into burning excess body fat.

If we want to "turn up" the heat, and burn calories at a faster rate, there are some tricks we can use. In order to "trick" our bodies into burning more body fat, we need to stimulate diet-induced thermogenesis.

There are two basic forms of thermogenesis: Obligatory and Facultative. Diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) is part of obligatory thermogenesis. A percent of the food and nutrients we eat is immediately converted to heat. DIT is the body's response to food or nutrient consumption. After food is eaten is has to be absorbed, metabolized, and stored. This process burns calories. Eating a meal stimulates an increase in heat production that can range from 10 percent to 40 percent.

In lean individuals, food energy is burned at a faster, more efficient rate (40%). In overweight individuals, there is a significant decrease rate of heat production (10%). The reason for this discrepancy is:

  • Insulin insensitivity
  • Ratios of lean muscle tissue to adipose body tissue (excess body fat)
  • Impaired sympathetic nervous system activity (slow metabolism)
  • Ratios of brown fat to white fat in the body
Some people can eat huge portions of food without gaining weight, while others gain weight easily. Part of this annoying phenomenon is thermogenesis. Somatotype is also contributing factor. The Ectomorph body types have faster metabolisms than either the Mesomorph or the Endomorph body types and dissipate extra calories through thermogenesis. Overweight and obese individuals typically have defective thermogenesis mechanisms, particularly the Endomorph body type.

Some people tend to blame "big bones" for their weight problems. Big bones don't cause the problem: people don't have big bones, dinosaurs have big bones. Metabolism is the problem, and metabolism is related to Somatotype. There are three different Somatotypes: the Ectomorph, the Endomorph, and the Mesomorph. Most people are a combination of two of the Somatotypes, but there are many people who fit the genetic description of one particular body type.

Somatotypes

Ectomorph Slim, lean, long bones, thin face, long lean legs and arms, fast metabolism, prefers light foods (chicken, fish, vegetables), can eat a lot of food without gaining weight.
Endomorph  Rounded body type, round face, gains weight easily, slow metabolism, frequent hunger cravings, craves carbohydrates; usually high glycemic carbs like french fries, potatoes, chips, candy, etc.
Mesomorph Muscular body type, thick muscles and bones, adds muscle easily, medium metabolism, craves meat and other proteins.

Fat-Burning Tricks
Regardless of body type, the average person desires a minimum of excess body fat. One of the most effective "tricks" in fat-burning is ingestion of thermogenic agents. Thermogenic agents include natural plant stimulants, nutraceuticals, and specific nutrients. Thermogenic nutrients can increase the number of calories you burn. Persons predisposed to obesity have decreased diet-induced thermogenesis - even after they have lost weight and become lean. So, for those who have a hard time losing weight, thermogenesis can really help speed up the fat-burning process.

Some diets actually suppress thermogenesis, which is the opposite of what you need to lose weight effectively. You want to speed up your metabolism, not slow it down. But some diets do just that, so it's no wonder that 95% of dieters fail at their efforts to lose weight.

Diets That Support Thermogenesis

  • High protein diets
  • Low calorie diets
  • Low carbohydrate diets
  • Very high-fat diets
  • Low sodium diets
  • Fasting
If you are having difficulty losing weight, of if you simply want to speed up fat-burning, you may want to consider using thermogenic agents. The easiest way to go about starting your thermogenic program is to use safe and effective thermogenic products. Thermogenic products are those that contain valid thermogenic agents in the form of drinks, capsules, or specialized foods. Some mineral nutrients, like potassium and magnesium, have thermogenic properties and can be found in thermogenic formulas.

The best time to ingest most thermogenic agents or formulas is 1/2 hour before meals. High glycemic meals and drinks reduce thermogenesis, and high-fat, high glycemic meals will definitely program your body to add body fat. Low calorie diets, juice fasts, liquid fasts, and fasting in general reduces thermogenesis.

To increase thermogenesis from within the body, increase muscle mass. Increasing muscle mass speeds the fat-burning process. It isn't necessary to become a bodybuilder in order to increase muscle mass. Even light workouts with weights can increase thermogenesis. Lower ambient temperatures (cold air) induce thermogenesis, so taking a brisk walk on a cool night, or taking cool showers helps increase metabolism for short periods of time.

The following list will help you identify thermogenic agents that are known to be effective. Look for these agents on product labels, or ask your health care professional where to shop for well made thermogenic products.

The Most Effective Thermogenic Agents are:

  • Niacin-Bound Chromium (also called chromium polynicotinate)
  • 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) (currently under investigation by the FDA)
  • Methylxanthines (Coffee, caffeine, tea, cola nut, Paullinea cupana)
  • Hydroxycitrate, Hydroxycitric acid, Garcinia Cambogia
  • Ephedrine, Ma Huang with caffeine (Not recommended due to potential increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, anxiety, and insomnia. Illegal in some states)
  • L-Carnitine
  • Nicotine (Obviously not recommended, but one reason why smokers gain weight when they stop smoking)
  • Aspirin (1 baby aspirin with each meal. Consult your physician before using this method)
  • Growth Hormone
  • L-Arginine
Other Nutrients That Act Synergistically to Thermogenic Agents:
  • Ferulic Acid (Found in rice bran)
  • Coenzyme Q10 (Frequently deficient in persons who are overweight or obese)
  • Low glycemic fruit sugars (like Ki-Sweet, which is thermogenic)
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • B-Vitamins
  • Niacin

Thermogenesis allows the body to eliminate excess calories by generating heat. Defective thermogensis, which is genetic in origin, is largely responsible for weight gain and obesity. For the percent of the population not genetically blessed, utilizing safe and effective thermogenic agents as part of a weight-control program helps reduce the decline in thermogenesis that accompanies dieting.
